HughesNet Now Offers Broadband to the Amazonas
Hughes Network Systems is a leading global satellite Internet provider, and through its operating entity in Brazil, Hughes do Brasil, HughesNet is now going to provide the Amazonas with broadband. This is available through a contract with PRODAM, a data processing company that is in the Amazonas state. This provides all the 61 municipalities of the state of Amazonas with high-speed wireless Internet, whether you are a business, government agency, or part of the public.
The reason this is such an accomplishment is because of the rough territory. Getting a satellite signal through the immensity of the rainforest, and also competing with the largest, most voluminous river in the world, a signal for such a large geographic scale is quite amazing. It will require Hughes to install base stations for every single municipality in the Amazonas. This is together with a large number of completely wireless customer terminals, over 900 in total.
The governor of the Amazonas state, Eduardo Braga, said “We govern an immense state that has continental dimensions. This technology will enhance our ability to better govern the entire territory, improving the dissemination of information to our citizens and assisting decision making in all areas of the administration, be it health, education, public security, or the environment.”
President of Hughes do Brasil, Delios Morais, said “Within 90 days of contract signature, the municipalities of Manacapuru, Itacoatiara, Tefé, and Tabatinga will be up and running. In 200 days we will have all of the first phase operational, followed by the other 46 municipalities in the second phase.” He added, “Our plan is to make the service available in five municipalities per month, so that by January 2010, the project should be concluded and the connectivity problems in the State of Amazonas will be solved.”
